The Surveillance Studies Network will sponsor up to 2 PhD students from the global south to attend the Surveillance Project’s bi-annual Surveillance Studies Summer Seminar (SSSS).

Regulations

1. Eligibility

To be eligible for the SSN Global Surveillance Studies Student Award, you must be:

• A registered PhD student on the date of application
• A citizen of any country outside North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand or OPEC countries
• Able to demonstrate genuine financial need

2. How to apply

Following the announcement of the 2011 Surveillance Studies Summer Seminar, SSN will publicise the awards via its website, various academic mailing lists and conferences.

Applicants should submit a one page précis of their doctoral research project, a two page curriculum vitae and a covering letter explaining their eligibility for the award by the closing date detailed in the announcement.

3. Adjudication

Adjudication will be carried out by the a committee of 3 members of the SSN Network Board appointed for this purpose by a vote of the Network Board;

The judges will meet annually in person or online, and the minutes of their meeting will be available to all members of the SSN, and subject to approval at the following Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the SSN;

For each SSSS, the judges will award up to two prizes of £500, to be paid towards the costs of the SSSS, and membership of the SSN for each winner (these figures will be subject to review at the SSN AGM);

The judges’ decision will be final;

The judges will not enter into any personal correspondence with applicants

Any complaints about the judging process can be raised at the SSN AGM

4. Successful applicants must produce a report on the SSSS to be published on the SSN website.
